Mindray M8 and OPU probe in action at University of Sydney’s Equine OPU Workshop

Veterinary professionals from across Australia and internationally recently gathered at the University of Sydney’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital Camden for a two-day Equine Ovum Pick-Up (OPU) Workshop, designed to give hands-on experience with advanced equine reproductive techniques.

Hosted by reproduction specialists Dr Gus Ruiz, and Dr Rory Nevard, from University’s Equine Centre, the workshop offered participants the chance to observe, practice, and refine OPU and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) techniques under expert supervision. The workshop included an impressive line-up of international speakers, including Dr Katrien Smits, Dr Juan Cuervo-Arango, Dr Andres Gambii, and guest speaker and anesthetist Dr Eduardo Uquillas from the University of Sydney, who explored the theory and practical application of different equine reproductive techniques and protocols.

BCF Ultrasound supported the workshop by showcasing the Mindray M8 Premium Portable Ultrasound System and transvaginal OPU Probe Holder, giving veterinarians the opportunity to explore equipment that can expand IVF capabilities to include advanced procedures such as OPU, or for those already offering OPU, see how our premium system can support more efficient workflows.

A highlight of the workshop was the live OPU demonstration, using two mares. Participants watched high-resolution imaging from the Mindray M8 on a large monitor, observing precise follicle targeting and aspiration in real time. The demonstration showcased the system’s thoughtful design: minimal dead space between needle and image ensures accurate aspiration, clear imaging supports confident decision-making, and an intuitive workflow keeps procedures running smoothly even under pressure. After the live demonstration, Dr Juan Cuervo-Arango led a wet lab where participants practiced oocyte recovery on post-mortem equine ovaries. Using the Mindray M8 and OPU probe, veterinarians applied the techniques they had observed during the live OPU demonstration, gaining hands-on experience that they can directly translate into their own clinical practice to achieve better reproductive outcomes for their clients. As one of the few providers in Australia specialising in OPU technology and support, BCF Ultrasound continues to help clinicians expand IVF capabilities, refine workflows, and achieve stronger reproductive outcomes. With OPU techniques growing in Australia, the workshop offered an exciting opportunity to connect, share knowledge, and experience first-hand how advanced technology and practical training are shaping the future of equine reproductive practice.
